ONGOING EXHIBIT – Norton Simon Museum
Discover the captivating fusion of language and visual art and witness an ongoing exhibit, Word as Image at the Norton Simon Museum! Immerse yourself in a thought-provoking journey where words transcend their traditional forms and morph into captivating visual experiences. From August 11, 2023, to January 8, 2024, witness the power of language as it transforms into vibrant and evocative images, blurring the lines between communication and artistic expression. Join us for an exploration of the written word like never before, as it takes shape and resonates on canvas, inviting you to engage, contemplate, and appreciate the limitless possibilities of human creativity.
Spanning the comical to the political to the conceptual, Word as Image calls our attention to how we are constantly “reading the image” in and out of museum spaces. As such, artists challenge us to consider language and image anew, by positioning words as an essential part of visual culture.
Known around the world as one of the most remarkable private art collections ever assembled, industrialist Norton Simon spent over 30 years amassing an astonishing collection of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century, and a stellar collection of Indian and Southeast Asian art spanning 2,000 years. Modern and Contemporary Art from Europe and the United States also occupies an important place in the Museum’s collections. The Museum houses more than 12,000 objects, roughly 1,000 of which are on view in the galleries and gardens. Two exhibition spaces feature rotating installations of artworks not on permanent display.
Admission is free for all visitors on the first Friday of every month from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Unless otherwise stated, events are free with admission and no reservations are required.
