Dive into L.A.’s Prehistoric Past: Unveiling the Secrets of “LA Underwater”
Ever wonder what swam beneath the bustling streets of Los Angeles millions of years ago? The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County (NHM) takes you on a captivating journey through time with their immersive exhibition, “LA Underwater.” Prepare to be amazed by the diverse marine life that once thrived in the very spot where our city now stands.
Unearthing a Submerged World
Millions of years ago, much of the Los Angeles region lay submerged beneath the Pacific Ocean. “LA Underwater” utilizes nearly 40 fossils unearthed from various locations across the city, offering a glimpse into this fascinating prehistoric era. From massive whale skulls to intricate ammonite shells, these fossilized remains tell the story of a vibrant underwater ecosystem teeming with diverse creatures.
Meet the Ancestral Angelenos
The exhibition isn’t just about showcasing fossils; it brings these ancient inhabitants to life. Through interactive displays and life-sized models, you’ll encounter creatures like the colossal whale shark, the bizarre Coursen’s Strange Seal, and even the giant tuskless walrus. Imagine these prehistoric giants gliding through the waters where iconic landmarks like the Hollywood sign now stand.
A Local Connection
What makes “LA Underwater” truly unique is its emphasis on local discoveries. Many of the fossils on display were unearthed by everyday Angelenos – construction workers, museum neighbors, and even backyard explorers. The exhibit highlights these local contributions, showcasing the power of citizen science and the treasures hidden beneath our feet.
More Than Just Fossils
“LA Underwater” goes beyond simply showcasing fossils. It delves into the environmental and geological forces that shaped Los Angeles over time. Visitors can explore interactive maps, learn about the formation of fossil fuels, and gain a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of our planet’s past, present, and future.
A Journey for All Ages
Whether you’re a paleontology enthusiast, a curious local, or simply seeking a family-friendly activity, “LA Underwater” has something to offer everyone. The engaging displays, interactive elements, and captivating storytelling make this exhibition a truly immersive and educational experience.
