TONIGHT’S PERFORMANCE
Steph Richards’ Phantom Power
Steph Richards, trumpet
Brian Walsh, bass clarinet
Eric Clarke, violin
Joshua White, keyboard
Andrew Munsey, bass
Alex Noice, guitar
Trumpet player Steph Richards is well known on both coasts as a versatile and incisive improviser, who has worked with contemporary and pop music luminaries Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, David Byrne, and Yoko Ono, among others. Phantom Power is a recent project combining structured composition and improvisation with Conduction, a conducted musical language created by pioneering cornetist/conductor Butch Morris, who was a close mentor to Richards. Under her direction, the ensemble expands and contracts from sextet to intimate duos and trios, exploring wide-open soundscapes and funky, rocky-infused grooves. “Steph Richards is a trumpeter whose skill set explodes every category.” (WBGO)
