LA’s Best: Lawn Bowling

LA’s Best: Lawn Bowling

Lawn bowling, is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a “jack” or “kitty”. It is played on a bowling green, which may be flat (for “flat-green bowls”) or convex or uneven (for “crown green bowls”). It is normally played outdoors surface is either natural grass, artificial turf.

Sunny Southern California is the perfect spot for this sport. It’s naturally warm climate make lawn bowling a year round activity in these parts.

Lawn Bowling is played with “bowls”, not balls. They always curve when you roll them. The object of the game is to earn points by completing a set of ends (innings) and getting your bowls closer to the jack (small white ball that is your target,) than your opponent. The team with the most points after all ends wins the match.

The Gear: 4 matched bowls, a jack (small white ball), and the lawn.

The Game: Triples (three bowlers on each team) requires each player to deliver three bowls. On each team there are three positions: Lead (he or she will start the bowls rolling), the Vice Skip (who will play second) and the Skip (who is team’s captain).

When all the players have delivered their bowls in one direction of the green, it completes the play of one end. Then the players deliver their bowls from the opposite direction of the green, completing another ‘end’. The game consists of typically 14, 16 or 18 ends, depending on players and their Skips.

The Challenge: The bowls curve to the right or to the left on the green because of their bias inherent to construction (heavier on one side.)
