City Guide: Atwater Village
The village was originally part of Rancho San Rafael which then became Rancho Santa Eulalia after a portion was purchased by W.C.B. Richardson in 1868. The land was subdivided and was offered for sale to prospective homebuilders. The subdivision that stretched from the Southern Pacific to the Los Angeles River eventually was named Atwater Tract for its proximity to the river – “at-water”.
The area would later be known as “Atwater” with the word “Village” added in 1986.
